Elementary students receive Great Citizen Award
Hoffman Estates Mayor William D. McLeod last week recognized 33 third grade students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School with the Great Citizen Award in honor of their fundraising efforts to provide car seats for needy children. The award recognizes individuals and groups who go above and beyond to serve the community.
The students’ effort began when teachers Lori Schmidt and Mallory Aiello told them they had three holiday gift choices from their teachers — a small individual gift, a gift for the classroom or a monetary donation to children in need.
The classes unanimously decided to donate money toward the purchase of car seats for less fortunate children in need of safe transportation. The students also asked to fundraise in order to purchase more car seats, and raised enough money to purchase a convertible infant seat and two booster seats.
