Pandora, Spotify to face more competition

NPR’s newly updated music app makes it a strong competitor for music services such as Spotify and Pandora. Users were already able to listen to songs and programs from NPR, read music blogs, as well as stream live broadcasts from stations around the country.

Now they can also watch live events, including some staged just for the app’s audience, and stream albums before they’re released.

And the whole kit and caboodle comes packaged in a great, intuitive user interface that makes it easy to discover and enjoy your favorite music. Free, for iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad.

New way to like

Cheers is trying to be the “like button” for the world, letting users share the things they’re enthusiastic about straight from their mobile device. Take a picture of the thing you want to applaud, such as a new restaurant, and you can share your appreciation over Facebook, Twitter or e-mail. The idea is an interesting one, and -- if used well -- could be a tool for curation and appreciation. Be warned: This app has the potential to overwhelm you with notices from those who feel the need to share their every waking thought with Facebook or Twitter friends. Free, for iOS devices; requires a camera.
