Milwaukee alderman to consider beating settlement

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee’s common council plans to soon consider a $2 million settlement involving a man beaten by off-duty police officers.

Seven former officers were convicted in the October 2004 beating of Frank Jude Jr. outside an off-duty police drinking party in Milwaukee. Jude filed the civil rights lawsuit in 2006.

The city and Jude agreed to the settlement last month.

The finance committee recommended Thursday that the council approve it. Another committee signed off earlier this week. The entire council is scheduled to take it up Tuesday.

Common Council President Willie Hines didn’t return a call Thursday seeking comment, but Mayor Tom Barrett’s spokeswoman Jodie Tabak said if the plan passes the council the mayor will approve it.
