Dawn Patrol: Teen killed; man shot; Toews out

An Arlington Heights man was killed after he was hit by a car in Elk Grove Village late Wednesday, authorities said in a late news release. Christopher Bogucki, 19, was crossing Busse Road at Oakton Street when he was struck by a motorist driving a Ford Fusion at 10:11 p.m., police said. Bogucki was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver wasn't harmed or charged last night, authorities said. Police are still investigating and expect to release more information later this morning. Full story.

Man shot at Mount Prospect intersection

Mount Prospect police are investigating a shooting that injured a 20-year-old man last night. Police said the victim was shot in the back at the corner of Busse Road and Willow lane about 6:30 p.m. Police were following up on leads late last night and said they were “deep into the investigation.” The victim was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Lauzen's consultant and Burns feud over emails

A consultant for state Sen. Chris Lauzen is calling for Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns' resignation, after revelations that Burns had forwarded campaign messages to his city email account. Burns never sent out campaign emails from that account, but Jon Zahm, the consultant on Lauren's campaign says the contents of the messages show Burns is not fit for office. The emails poke fun at Lauzen's wife and Randy Hultgren's appearance at a prayer dinner, among other things. Full story.

Northwest suburban high schools are teeming with bright scientific minds, so a program that guarantees a spot in one of the nation's most prestigious engineering schools while saving tens of thousands of dollars is bound to garner some interest.

That's what officials at Harper College in Palatine are hoping for, at least, with the launch of an exclusive partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Engineering. Full story.

RTA OKs $425,000 to fight transportation cuts

Millions of dollars in federal funding will be cut from the Regional Transportation Authority if a controversial U.S. House transportation bill passes, which has prompted RTA leaders to hire a lobbying firm to fight the measure. RTA directors approved a $425,000 contract hoping to sway Illinois' congressional delegation to oppose the legislation. Full story.

Romney and Santorum trade barbs in debate

Last night's 20th and possibly Republican presidential primary debate showed Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum spar over health care, spending earmarks and federal bailouts. Critical primaries in Arizona and Michigan are in six days, and Santorum continues to surge in national polls. Full story.

Sportsman's Park to be tested for contamination

Crews will start testing soil and water samples at Naperville's Sportsman's Park within the next two weeks to determine the level of lead contamination caused by six decades of trapshooting at the site. Steel pellets have been used at the property since 1998, but from 1937 until that year many shooters used lead shot. The city is working with the EPA to clear the soil and has yet to determine how much the project will cost each agency. Full story.

Ack, snow is on the way. But, you have about 12 hours to prepare before it starts to fall. Its 34 degrees right now and will reach 41 during the day today, but then it turns colder this evening when the wet, heavy flakes start to fall. A winter storm watch goes into effect this evening and remains in effect until 9 a.m. Friday, with meteorologists predicting from 6-inches to 9-inches of snow hitting the ground before the storm moves on. Traffic

An overturned dump truck is blocking all lanes on the outbound Dan Ryan in Chicago near the outbound I-55 ramp. Ambulances and fire trucks are on the scene. A second accident that has resulted in one lane being closed on I-55 south near the I-355 interchange near Lemont. Obviously, its slippery outside, so people should be cautious when driving this morning. Full traffic.

Injured Toews will sit tonight against Dallas

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who sat out Tuesday night's win over Detroit, will miss another start tonight. One radio outlet reported Toews was suffering from concussion-like symptoms, but the Hawks stuck to the “upper-body injury” lingo. Coach Joel Quenneville said Toews is “progressing” and is listed as day to day. The Hawks look to win their fifth in a row when they face Dallas tonight. Full story.

Noah records his first triple-double

Bulls center Joakim Noah is headed off for the all-star break in style after notching his first triple-double in last night's win over the Milwaukee Bucks. Noah piled up 13 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in the win, which has the Bulls heading into the break with a 27-8 record. The feat was the first by a Bulls center Artis Golmore did it in 1977. “The only reason why I was able to do it was because they were trying to get the ball out of Derrick (Rose's) hands,” Noah said. “When they put two on Derrick, I'm just making plays off that.” Full story.
