2nd inmate mistakenly released from N. Ind. jail
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — A northern Indiana sheriff’s department is investigating how an inmate was released from jail by mistake, the second time it has happened in less than a month.
Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer tells the LaPorte County Herald-Argus that an investigation is underway. He says his staff recently underwent training to prevent mistaken releases, so disciplinary action will be taken.
He says a man in jail on a domestic violence charge was released Tuesday, apparently because he shared the same name with another man scheduled to be released. Mollenhauer says he was recaptured within an hour. The sheriff says the man apparently didn’t do anything wrong because he had applied for release and thought he was granted one.
On Jan. 26, another inmate was released when he claimed to be someone else.
