Scouting the Class 2A Westmont regional final
Class 2A Westmont regional final
No. 1 Immaculate Conception (24-3) vs. No. 2 Walther Lutheran (16-12)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Outlook: IC seeks its third regional title in coach Darren Howard's 12-year tenure and its first since 2008, in Class 1A. The Knights come off a 71-52 win over No. 4 seed Westmont, forward Brian Harvey scoring 25 points, swingman Demetrius Carr 18 and point guard John Cheng 15. The Knights, making 28 of 54 shots, tied the program wins record set in 1967. Walther edged No. 3 Timothy Christian 64-60 in the other Westmont semifinal. Quickness helps fuel second-year coach Al Lainio's Broncos. Guards Patrell Green and Jeff Walker each average around 3 steals to go with respective 17- and 13-point scoring averages. These were the top contenders in the Suburban Christian Conference Gold Division all season, 10-0 IC beating Walther twice by scores of 69-47 and 48-45 led by the Big Three of Harvey, Cheng and Carr. Knights guard Jason Dunn limited Green's lane penetration last time, but Howard is concerned with Walther forward Jon Fuqua patrolling the baseline. He hurt Timothy with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting, plus 11 rebounds.
