Wisconsin Assembly votes to end workplace discrimination awards
MADISON, Wis. — The state Assembly has passed a bill that would put an end to punitive and compensatory damages for workplace discrimination.
Under current state law, a judge can order employers in workplace discrimination cases to pay up to $300,000 in punitive and compensatory damages depending on the size of the business. The Republican measure would prohibit judges from awarding such damages.
The state Department of Workforce Development could still award workers back pay, costs and attorney fees.
The assembly passed the bill 60-35. The Senate approved the measure in November. It now goes to Republican Gov. Scott Walker for his signature.
