Nobel winner in physics to speak at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — A professor at the Australian National University who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in October will be in northern Indiana to give a lecture on "The Accelerating Universe."

Brian Schmidt shared the Nobel Prize with two other U.S.-born scientists for discovering that the universe is expanding at an accelerating pace. The findings overturned the conventional idea that the expansion was slowing.

Schmidt's lecture Feb. 27 at the University of Notre Dame will describe the discovery that suggests upwards of 70 percent of the universe is composed of an unknown form of energy.
