Man who fell through ice in Johnsburg identified

A 47-year-old custom homes builder from Johnsburg who died Sunday night was playing hockey with his son on a backyard pond before fell through the ice.

Patrick Rorig, 47, was underwater for more than 30 minutes before a diver pulled him from a retention pond behind his home, officials said.

Rorig was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he died hours later, according to fire officials.

A dive team found Rorig about 10 feet from the hole he fell through, in an area that was 10 feet deep, officials said.

An autopsy on Rorig is scheduled for Tuesday, said Lake County coroner Artis Yancey.

Rorig was the owner and president of Rorig Homes, which is based in Johnsburg.

Fire officials said the ice behind his home was about 2 inches thick.

Rorig is the second person to die this month after falling through thin ice in McHenry County near Johnsburg.

On Feb. 3, 29-year-old Justin Ribar of Wonder Lake was fishing on Pistakee Lake when a witnessed heard him yell for help about 300 yards from the shore. The man’s body was found the next morning.
