<h3 class="briefHead">Children saved after falling into Grayslake area pond</h3>

A 40-year-old Grayslake man plowed his way through 25 feet of thin ice to rescue a boy who had fallen into a Grayslake area pond last night. This after another neighbor threw rope to save two other children. Four children in all had fallen through the ice, but the boy was too far to reach with a rope. "I was afraid he was going to go under before I got there," Robert George said. "I don't think I could sit there and watch a child die like that. I just kept going." Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">DuPage Housing Authority to revoke subsidies for some</h3>

New leadership at the DuPage Housing Authority is cracking down on lax compliance and cut off rent subsidies for three seniors at a complex in Roselle because they're too young. One of those residents has been hit with a $39,126 bill because she moved in when she was 56. The Wheaton-based agency previously mismanaged more than $10 million by failing to follow federal regulations and its own policies. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Man shot and killed by Waukegan police was an ex-Marine</h3>

The 33-year-old man who was shot dead by Waukegan police late Wednesday night was a former U.S. Marine, who suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, officials said. John D. Corcoran was pointing a gun at a man who was lying at his feet at a Waukegan hotel when police entered the building, officials said. An officer shot and killed him when Corcoran pointed the gun toward police. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Aurora woman, 3 children missing</h3>

Police are searching for an Aurora woman who left home early Wednesday with her three young sons after an argument with her fiance. Laureth "Laurie" M. May, a former teacher in La Grange Highlands, might be with a 17-year-old former student who was reported missing shortly after May left her home. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">One in custody after shooting outside Gurnee restaurant</h3>

Gurnee police continue to investigate a shooting that occurred late Wednesday night outside the In-Laws Restaurant, leaving one man injured. A 27-year-old North Chicago man was in police custody yesterday but had not been charged. Police said there was an altercation involving about 15 people in the parking lot when the shooting occurred. <h3 class="briefHead">Super PAC targets Walsh in 8th District</h3>

As 8th Congressional District Democratic contenders Raja Krishnamoorthi and Tammy Duckworth spar over pledges against super PAC funding, along comes a liberal super PAC that is targeting 8th District Republican incumbent Joe Walsh of McHenry. Duckworth says she'll stand by a pledge against super PAC funding if Walsh does the same. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Sears to lay of 100 at headquarters, calls move 'necessary'</h3>

Sears Holdings Crop., agreed to keep its headquarters in Hoffman Estates in exchange for large tax breaks, announced it has laid off about 100 workers at that headquarters. Analysts weren't surprised by the cuts, as Sears planned to cut about $200 million in costs in 2012. Sears has 6,100 workers at its headquarters. "One hundred people at the headquarters sounds small," said Paul Swinand, an analyst with Chicago-based Morningstar. Full story.

A jack-knifed semi on the inbound Eisenhower is causing delays at the Tri-State merger. One inbound lane was shut down trying to remove the semi from the scene. Motorists should also avoid a barn fire in the 2100 block of Route 47 in Woodstock. The roadway was shut down early this morning to give firefighters room to battle the blaze. People should also avoid construction traffic on Downers Place and the Fox River near Aurora because of a bridge replacement. <h3 class="briefHead">Finally, the Blackhawks win!</h3>

Remember that scowl Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville wore for the better part of the last three weeks?

It was gone last night, replaced by a big smile after the Hawks ended their nine-game losing streak with an improbable 4-2 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, Tim Sassone reports. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Deng does it again for the Bulls</h3>

The Bulls seemed to be on the ropes a couple of times against Boston last night, but they eventually used some unconventional methods to secure an 89-80 victory at the United Center. Derrick Rose was out again, but Luol Deng's playmaking is a trend now: He collected 10 assists to go with 23 points against the Celtics. Carlos Boozer was the beneficiary of many of those passes as he hit 11 of 15 shots for 23 points and added 15 rebounds, Mike McGraw reports. Full story.
