South Elgin grad Kumerow honored
South Elgin graduate Cortney Kumerow was rewarded for her recent strong play.
Kumerow, a 6-1 junior center on the Wisconsin Whitewater women’s basketball team, was named the UW-Whitewater Wal-Mart Athlete of the Week for women’s basketball.
Kumerow earned the award after helping the Warhawks to two recent wins against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference rivals UW-Platteville and UW-Superior.
Against UW-Platteville, Kumerow played 27 minutes and scored 17 points. She shot 7-for-7 from the field in the game. She also grabbed 2 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and was cited for playing solid defense (1 steal).
Kumerow then played 33 minutes against UW-Superior and again scored 17 points. This time, she shot 7-for-12 from the field. She also hauled in 9 rebounds and blocked a team season-high 4 shots and added 2 steals. She helped force 28 UW-Superior turnovers.
Kinross honored: Michael Kinross, a 2009 graduate of Crystal Lake South and a former all-state swimmer for the District 155 co-op team, was recently named the Mid-American Conference swimmer of the week. A junior at Eastern Michigan, Kinross recently contributed to 3 first-place finishes in the team’s recent 176.5-123.5 victory over Miami. It was Eastern Michigan’s 60th consecutive MAC dual-meet win.
Kinross, who sports a 3.47 grade-point average as a secondary education major, swept the butterfly events thanks to personal season-best times in each. He completed the 100 fly in 50.96 and claimed first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.62. He also contributed in the Eagles’ first-place 200 medley relay win that combined for a 1:33.44 finish — the second-fastest time for the team this season.
Moran at Northern Iowa: Former Jacobs boys basketball star John Moran continues to move up the University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball all-time ladder. According to the team’s most recent published game notes, Moran recently moved into a tie for No. 4 all-time on the UNI games played list (127). He was slated late last week to move into a tie for the No. 3 slot at 128 games.
Moran also was closing in on 1,000 points for his four-year career at UNI. According to the release, Moran was 31 points shy of becoming the 34th player in program history to hit 1,000 points. As of late last week, Moran ranked No. 35 on the team’s all-time scoring list with 969 points.
Additionally, Moran ranked, through late last week, No. 2 on the team’s all-time 3-pointers made list with 183. Ben Jacobson (2003-2006) holds the UNI record with 203.
Through 28 games this season (all starts), Moran was averaging 7.0 points per game. He was averaging 31.0 minutes of playing time. Moran was shooting .368 from the field and .345 from the 3-point line (41-for-119), while also shooting .688 from the free-throw line. Moran had 35 assists, 36 steals and was averaging 2.9 rebounds per game for a Northern Iowa team that was 17-11 and 7-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play to start the week.
Bartlett sisters excel at Northern Illinois: Bartlett graduates Rebecca and Julianne Cronin recently helped the Northern Illinois University women’s track and field team dominate at the recent the IWU invitational. NIU won 11 event titles, broke six meet records, five track records and two school records.
Rebecca Cronin returned to her winning ways in the 800 meters, toppling the meet and track record with a time of 2:16.55 to lead four Huskies in the Top 5. Julianne Cronin was fifth in the event at 2:28.53.
Rebecca Cronin was part of a 3,200 relay team that coasted to victory with a 9:49.67 clip, nearly breaking the NIU record in the process. Julianne Cronin was part of a 1,600 relay team that came from behind on the final lap to beat Ball State’s relay at the line by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 4:03.48.
Tamburrino at Roosevelt: Jacobs graduate Maria Tamburrino is a sophomore guard on the Roosevelt University women’s basketball team. Through 27 games (all starts), Tamburrino was averaging 9.1 points per game and a team-high 7.4 rebounds a contest. She was averaging 23.8 minutes of playing time. Tamburrino was shooting .803 from the free-throw line (53-for-66) and had 12 three-pointers to her credit. She also had 44 assists, 48 steals and 14 blocks.
In a 86-76 loss to St. Xavier, Tamburrino had 9 points and 5 rebounds and also had 17 points and an impressive 17 rebounds (11 offensive) in 24 minutes of action in a loss to Olivet Nazarene. She also had 5 blocked shots against Olivet.
Roosevelt was 13-14 and 1-6 in conference play to start the week.
Yohn at Bradley: St. Edward product Katie Yohn is having another fine season with the Bradley University women’s basketball team.
Yohn, a junior guard and a medical technology major, had started all 25 of the team’s game at the week’s beginning and was averaging a team-high 28.3 minutes of action.
She was shooting .417 from the 3-point line (50-for-120) and .849 from the free-throw line (45-for-53).
Yohn also ranks 10th among all NCAA Division I women’s basketball players this season in 3-point shooting percentage (. 417).
Yohn was second on the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game and also was averaging 3.8 rebounds to go with 64 assists, 34 steals and 18 blocks.
In a recent 82-64 victory over Evansville, Yohn had 18 points and shot 4-for-9 from the 3-point line. She played 32 minutes in that contest. She also had 8 points and 7 rebounds in 30 minutes of action to help Bradley notch a 66-50 win over Southern Illinois.
Yohn comes into this weekend with 977 career points. She needs 4 points to move into 16th place on the program’s all-time scoring list.
Additionally, Yohn ranks second all-time in program history in 3-pointers made with 162. The record is 182.
Yohn has scored 10 or more points in 15 of Bradley’s last 20 games this season.
