Cop shoots, kills man with gun at Waukegan hotel

A Waukegan police officer shot and killed a man brandishing a gun at a hotel Wednesday night, according to authorities.

An autopsy is scheduled for later today on John Corcoran, age unknown, from Waukegan, said Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey.

Officers responded to the Holiday Inn Express, 611 Lakehurst Road., to a report of a man with a gun at 8:30 p.m., said Commander Gabe Guzman of the Waukegan Police Department.

When officers arrived, the suspect produced a handgun, Guzman said, prompting an officer to fire one shot.

Guzman said the single shot hit the offender in the chest. Waukegan Fire Department personnel responded to treat the suspect, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Guzman said.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the shooting. Police said the officer was not injured.
