Slaying at nursing home under investigation

The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating the fatal assault of a nursing home resident in Oak Park.

Authorities say 80-year-old Anibal Calderon was assaulted Sunday by a 66-year-old resident of the same nursing home. Both lived at Oak Park Healthcare Center in Oak Park.

Oak Park police say investigators were called to the nursing home and found Calderon unconscious. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he died Tuesday.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office says the victim died from blunt head trauma and ruled his death a homicide.

The state health department has investigated numerous past complaints about the nursing home.
