Western Michigan routs Northern Illinois 78-53

DE KALB — Demetrius Ward scored 18 points and Western Michigan beat Northern Illinois 78-53 on Wednesday night.

The Broncos (11-15, 5-7 Mid-American) were in control most of the way, going from a 10-10 game to a 34-24 halftime lead. Ward scored 12 of his points in the first half.

Flenard Whitfield had 17 points and eight rebounds for Western Michigan. Nate Hutcheson scored 15 points and Brandon Pokley scored 11, all in the second half when the Broncos turned it into a runaway thanks to a 17-0 run that gave them a 63-38 lead.

Reserve Tony Nixon was the only player in double figures for the Huskies (3-21, 2-10) with 12 points. Northern Illinois was outrebounded 39-26.
