Family, relatives, hometown friends, and teammates gathered in the small-town Milwaukee suburb of Brown Deer to say goodbye to Shaun Wild last night in a packed gymnasium with more than 1,000 people. Buses and cars from Naperville and Valparaiso University brought more than 200 people to the ceremony, which family members called "a celebration of life." Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Prosecutors try to remove possibility of bail for stabbing suspect</h3>
Before he stabbed a teacher to death inside a Naperville nightclub, Daniel Olaska harassed two women and swore at a couple talking about the Super Bowl, prosecutors said Thursday as they sought to raise or revoke his $3 million bail. "Additionally, his social interactions at the bar indicate that (he) has rage boiling just beneath the surface of his personality," they wrote. DuPage County Judge Kathryn Creswell, who set Feb. 17 for a bail hearing. Until then, he will be held in the county jail. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Lombard woman hopes national mortgage settlement will help her keep home</h3>
A Lombard mother, widow and breast cancer survivor hopes a portion of the approximately $1 billion headed Illinois' way in a multistate settlement with the nations's largest lenders will help her refinance her mortgage. The roughly $25 billion federal settlement involves allegations of widespread "robo-signing" of foreclosure documents and other fraudulent practices that occurred after the housing bubble burst. People who've lost homes can't get them back, but people struggling now with mortgages might be able to get help. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">DUI victim's father berates Kane County judge at sentencing</h3>
A Kane County courtroom was chaotic yesterday after a judge sentenced a Wayne man to 30 days in jail and 90 days on an alcoholic monitoring device for violating probation in a DUI that killed a St. Charles East High School graduate. A judge said he was "not prepared to give up on Josh (Lorusso)," who was sentenced. The father of Cameron Godee, who was killed in the crash, yelled at the judge, "How much did they pay you this time?" The judge yelled back as the father was removed for contempt of court. Prosecutors wanted Lorusso sentenced to prison time. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Buffalo Grove denies it'd be running OTB parlor on village campus</h3>
The village of Buffalo Grove will not be running a gambling facility, village leaders said yesterday. An off-track betting parlor could be setting up just steps from both the police station and village hall inside a village-owned property. The city would continue to own the building but lease the space to Hawthorne Race Course Inc., who would pay for the renovation of the OTB area in the facility. "We are absolutely, unequivocally not (getting into) the gambling business," Trustee Lester Ottenheimer said. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">November Bartlett train derailment caused by broken rail</h3>
A November train derailment in Bartlett that caused more than $2 million in total damages was caused by a broken rail, according to a federal report. Twenty-two cars of the freight train derailed early on Nov. 3 near the Elgin-Bartlett border, disrupting a commute for about 11,000 Metra riders. The report states the train was heading 40 mph when it ran over the broken rail. Full story.
<h3 class="briefHead">Tilted Kilt hit with sexual harassment suit</h3>
Nineteen former employees at the Tilted Kilt's Chicago location filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the sports bar, which is known for servers who wear skimpy Celtic-themed outfits. The federal lawsuit lists 28 specific complaints including that a manager grabbed a worker and told an employee, "Meow, meow - you're a dirty kitty," and, "You don't know what I'd like to do to you." A cold front will move in around noon today, causing temperatures to drop to the mid-20s The snow is expected to start around noon and potentially last through the evening. People in DuPage, Kane and Lake County are expected to get between 1 and 3 incheas before the snow moves out, but those closer to Lake Michigan in Cook and Will counties are expected to get much more.
