Durbin backs bill to require TV in high court

EDWARDSVILLE — A southwestern Illinois bank teller is accused of stealing more than $7,000 while on the job.

Prosecutors in Madison County charged 51-year-old Lori Surgant with theft in excess of $500.

Authorities say Surgant was a teller at First National Bank of Staunton in Edwardsville when her employer suspected she stole the money. The bank reported the suspected theft last month to Madison County sheriff's investigators.

Sheriff's Capt. T. Mike Dixon says the criminal complaint alleges that Surgant stole more than $7,000 from the bank from November through Jan. 20.

Surgant was arrested Monday. Her bond was set at $25,000 bond, though it was not immediately clear if she's posted that and is free.

A message left at her home Thursday was not immediately returned.
