Chicago thieves cut into safe, get $500K in gems

Thieves tunneling through the wall of a next-door sushi restaurant broke into a Chicago jewelry store and cut into its 2-ton safe. Evading motion detectors, they made off with $500,000 worth of gems from the shop in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

In what sounds like a movie script, Dana Sullivan, the manager of Steve Quick Jeweler, says she found a 4- by 4-inch hole in the back of the safe when she showed up for work Wednesday. She says the safe is called a TL-30 because it's supposed to take even the most accomplished burglar 30 minutes to crack it.

The Chicago Tribune reported Friday that owner Steve Quick believes there's a good chance it was an inside job.

Chicago police have made no arrests in the case.
