Christian Liberty, Leyden wins

A balanced attack was just enough for Christian Liberty’s boys basketball team to edge Mooseheart in the first round of the inaugural Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament Friday in Arlington Heights.

David Colbert had 11 points and hit three 3-pointers and Mike Hennek scored 9 points. Kyle Moriarty added 8 points for Christian Liberty (15-9).

Christian Liberty will play Rockford Christian Life in today’s 11:30 a.m. semifinal. The other semifinal between Rockford Christian and Westminster Christian is at 10 a.m.

The championship game is at 5:30 p.m. and the third-place game starts at 4 p.m.

Leyden 74, Willowbrook 60: Alex Herrera scored a game-high 26 points as Leyden (15-7, 6-4) pulled away to the West Suburban Gold win in Franklin Park.

Sammy Moya scored 14 points and Jonny Woolf and Brian McNamera added 12 points apiece a the Eagles led only 49-44 after three quarters against Willowbrook.

Leyden’s victory total is its highest since 1998-99 when it was 18-10. It takes a five-game winning streak into tonight’s game at Downers Grove South.
