Ind. woman faces neglect trial in grandson’s death

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The grandmother of a 10-year-old boy who police say was fatally beaten by his father will stand trial next month on neglect charges in the case.

WSBT-TV reports 53-year-old Dellia Castile faces trial after failing to reach a plea agreement Wednesday. Prosecutors allege Castile failed to report abuse in the November beating death of her grandson, Tramelle Sturgis.

Police say Castile’s son, Terry Sturgis, killed the boy and also abused his other sons when they lived with Castile in South Bend.

He’s charged with murder in his son’s death and eight felony counts of battery in the other alleged attacks on his children.

Sturgis is accused of using a hot iron, a hot screw driver, a wooden club or his hands to beat his children from 2008 to 2011.
