Cause of death still unclear for 17-day-old girl

MILWAUKEE — A 17-day-old Milwaukee girl had blood in her nose and airway when she died last Friday, but an autopsy found no trauma.

The cause of Janelle Downey’s death is still undetermined.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports it’s unclear whether the girl died while sleeping in a Pack `n Play or in a bed by her mother.

Both parents initially told police the baby was in a Pack `n Play when they went to sleep, and wasn’t breathing the next morning. The parents gave conflicting statements.

The medical examiner’s report says authorities found a spot of blood on the adult mattress toward the head of the bed. An adult fleece used to cover the mattress also had blood on it, and had been under the infant when she was found.
