Carmel surprises Benet

Carmel Catholic girls basketball coach Kelly Perz couldn’t have asked for a better way to head into the state tournament.

Kathleen Felicelli scored 13 points, and Cassidy Kloss and Sarah McHugh added 11 apiece, as the Corsairs stunned visiting Benet Academy 51-46 in overtime in the teams’ East Suburban Catholic Conference game Wednesday night.

Benet (22-5, 7-2) had won 18 games in a row.

“It was huge,” Perz said of the victory, “especially against a tough team going into the playoffs. They’re very, very well-coached and very well-disciplined.”

Carmel (16-12, 4-5) got what Perz called two “monster” 3-pointers from Madeline Felipez in the second half, and the Corsairs outscored Benet 15-10 in overtime. One of Felipez’s 3s broke a 39-39 tie in OT.

“We’ve had so many close games this year and haven’t been able to close out well,” Perz said. “Tonight we did.”

Nicole Valentine led Benet with 18 points, while Christen Prasse scored 14 and Sidney Prasse added 11.
