Sundling earns superior rating at jazz festival

The Walter R. Sundling Junior High Jazz Band was awarded a superior rating and tied for third place out of the 15 participating bands at the 35th Annual Northshore Jazz Festival at Glenbrook South High School on Jan. 12.

In addition, Nate Carlson, an eighth-grade trombone player, was given an outstanding soloist award at the festival.

Congratulations to the following members of the WRS Jazz Band for this achievement: Jason Buis, Matthew Mayer, Drake Roberts and Elias Volny on trumpet; Patrick Brand, Nate Carlson, Shayna Rosenberg and Adam Smith on trombone; Janet Kim and Claire Stevens on alto saxophone; Tristan Osterhues and Kenny Semelsberger on tenor saxophone; Julia Clarke on baritone saxophone; Leah Fallon on electric guitar; Charlie Kaye on bass guitar; Ryan Jannak-Huang on piano; Michael Hilmer and Braden Kobeski on drum set; and Scott McCoppin and Yugan Sakthi on auxiliary percussion.
