Neighborhood profile: Sterling Green in Buffalo Grove

Luxury custom homes on large lots, some backing to the Arboretum Golf Course, as well as excellent schools and an ideal location make Sterling Green one of Buffalo Grove's most sought-after subdivisions.

“This is a picturesque area with the convenience of Buffalo Grove and the acreage of Long Grove,” said Judy Greenberg, broker with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

“People really like the high-end custom homes, the views and having a half acre to an acre of land. So they have a variety of home styles and great lots,” she said.

Many homes show the highest quality materials and custom features such as limestone floors, a dual staircase, first-floor office, custom built-ins, finished basement, sauna, sunroom and pool.

Situated on Route 22 east of Route 83, Sterling Green is bordered on the east by the Arboretum Golf Course and on the west by Long Grove. The neighborhood sits five minutes from the train station.

The Arboretum Golf Course offers lush landscaping and beautiful views. The course, owned and operated by the village, opened in 1990 and features a clubhouse, pro shop, snack shop, bar and restaurant along with a professional staff.

Seven years ago, Lisa and Marc Roth moved to Sterling Green from a smaller house in Buffalo Grove.

“We wanted a larger home, and we wanted to stay in Buffalo Grove,” Lisa Roth said. “I think our street is very pretty. This used to be a tree farm, so there are a lot of mature trees. And we have a big lot that is beautifully landscaped; we love our backyard.

“We like the neighborhood. People take good care of their homes, and they're always making improvements,” Roth said. “Everyone is really nice. A lot of the ladies on the street get together for lunch or dinner.”

Sterling Green is a stable neighborhood with little turnover, and only two homes are now on the market.

The neighborhood is in a convenient location within walking distance of shopping and schools, Greenberg said.

“The location is perfect. We're close to the middle school and high school, and we love the schools,” Roth said. “Dominick's (grocery store) is across the street. And we're close to Deer Park and also Sunset Foods.”

Nearby amenities include Didier Farms, where every autumn kids love to get lost in the corn maze, find the perfect pumpkins and go on hayrides. The Marriott Theatre in nearby Lincolnshire offers professional musical theater productions in an intimate setting.

The park district offers a variety of programs and classes for every member of the family and popular facilities such as a state-of-the-art fitness center, skate park and the Happy Tails dog park, which gets rave reviews.

Residents who want to get involved in the community have several groups from which to choose, such as the Buffalo Grove Garden Club, which is dedicated to gardening, flower arranging and community beautification.

Many community events bring people together. Buffalo Grove Days, a five-day community picnic, draws people from all around. The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band performs classical, Broadway, jazz and pop music for audiences, and the Buffalo Grove Fine Art Festival features 150 artists at the Towne Center.

Buffalo Grove, dotted with forest preserves and natural areas, offers a bit of a country atmosphere along with convenient shopping, dining, culture and entertainment.
