EKG testing set for Feb. 8 at Lake Zurich High

The Max Schewitz Foundation will bring the Screen for Teens, a free schoolwide EKG screening program, to Lake Zurich High School Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Through the effort of staff and parent volunteers this screening will be offered to all high school students. Lake Zurich joins approximately 16 other schools in the surrounding area that have participated in this program.

To date the Max Schewitz Foundation has screened more than 26,000 students.

“We are proud to work with the Max Schewitz Foundation to offer this EKG screening opportunity to our students,” said Lake Zurich High Principal Kim Kolze. “Knowledge is power and if this information helps identify even one potentially threatening health issue we have provided a valuable service and education to our students.”

The Max Schewitz Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 by the family and friends of Max Schewitz who died from sudden cardiac death at the age of 20.

It has dual missions: To support education, prevention and research of sudden cardiac death in young people; and to support environmental conservation, a lifelong interest of Max’s. Specifically, the foundation supports the education and conservation of fragile and threatened reptile ecosystems and species.

“As a parent of three student athletes, I am eagerly awaiting this free EKG screening program,” Lori Pothast said. “It is truly a great opportunity to get valuable health information that could impact a young life.”
