Elgin's Moore headed to Whitewater

Elgin running back Dennis Moore this week passed on a Division-I football opportunity in favor of joining a Division-III powerhouse.

Moore had a standing offer from Drake University of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA), but he felt the successful program at Wisconsin-Whitewater was the best fit. He gave his commitment Tuesday.

The Warhawks have won three straight Division-III national championships and four in the last five years, all at the expense of nemesis Mount Union College.

“They had a really good senior running back last year, but he's leaving so there's an opportunity for me coming in,” said Moore, who missed 3 games last fall with various injuries. “They recruited me as a running back from the beginning, which was a positive. A lot of schools were talking defensive back, but I like playing running back more.”

A two-time Daily Herald All-Area selection, Moore rushed last season for 590 yards on 97 carries (6.1 avg.). The 5-foot-10, 185 pound senior scored 4 rushing touchdowns.

Moore took the initiative by contacting the Whitewater coaches when he was a junior. The staff stayed in touch right through last weekend's official visit.

“I'm looking forward to being a Warhawk,” said Moore, who holds a 3.0 grade-point average and plans to study business. “This is a great football program and a good school, too. I hope to be playing on ESPN.”

Wisconsin-Whitewater has appeared in the nationally televised Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl seven consecutive years.

Also a three-year starting guard for Elgin's 16-2 boys basketball team, Moore was scheduled to have the cast removed from his broken hand Thursday. He hopes to return to the lineup in time to play at rival Larkin next Friday, he said.

Mosley commits: Larkin senior defensive back Shaquille Mosley gave his commitment Tuesday night to play for NAIA Robert Morris University of Chicago, which plays its home games in Arlington Heights.

“I'm really excited to play for them and play football at the next level,” said Mosley, who also plays basketball for Larkin.
