Refrigerator manufacturer to close Madison plant

MADISON, Wis. — A refrigerator and stove manufacturer has notified the state it plans to close its Madison plant.

About 100 workers at Sub-Zero will be out of work by the end of June. The Sheet Metal Workers local union says the majority of production is in nearby Fitchburg, which will not be affected.

The company’s notice says layoffs will begin in April. Local 565 spokesman Dave Goodspeed tells the State Journal the job cuts are hard to swallow after recent contract concessions cost employees 20 percent of their pay and benefits and froze wages for five years.
