Former Chicago cop convicted of drug charges
A former Chicago police officer has been found guilty on federal drug charges.
But the jury failed to reach a verdict Tuesday on racketeering charges filed against 55-year-old Glenn Lewellen, who was a member of the Chicago Police Department from 1986 to 2003.
Lewellen had been free on $1 million bond, but he was taken into custody shortly after U.S. District Judge Joan Gottschall read the verdict. Lewellen’s relatives waved and gave him thumbs-up signs before he was taken from the courtroom.
Prosecutors contended Lewellen was a partner in a violent drug ring. He was accused of working with drug traffickers — including one of his own informants — to steal drugs and money from other drug dealers.
Four other defendants were also convicted of various charges.
