'Quidam' ready to take center stage at Sears Centre

Out of the 21 unique shows Cirque du Soleil will present around the world in 2012, Jessica Leboeuf calls “Quidam” one of the series' “jewels.”

“It really showcases the human body and how you can push it,” said Leboeuf, the show's publicist.

Eight performances of “Quidam” will take place at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates from Wednesday, Feb. 8 to Sunday, Feb. 12. The schedule includes a 7:30 p.m. show on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; two shows on Saturday at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.; and two on Sunday, at 1 and 5 p.m.

Quidam — which means a nameless passer-by in Latin — is set in a fantastical world thought up by a child who feels ignored by her parents. The story unfolds as the child's imagination is opened and she meets a variety of characters who help her discover her true personality.

While the show takes place outside of reality, Leboeuf said it stays “very connected with human emotion.”

“All the characters are human-based and in touch with the real world even though the show is taking place in a little girl's imagination,” she said. “It's very inspirational. It really talks to you about following your dreams.”

The “Quidam” cast is made up of 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from 18 countries. Leboeuf noted that the show also has almost as many crew members as cast.

One highlight of the show, she said, is the “German Wheel,” which features a performer doing acts while placed inside a human-sized wheel.

“Quidam” also includes aerial performances, group acts and funny clown appearances.

“There is really something for everyone ... whether it's to be entertained, or to be amazed,” Leboeuf said.

The finale, which involves 16 performers catching each other, shows off the actors' “feats of power, balance (and) teamwork,” Leboeuf said.

“It's just beautiful. It's a feel good moment at the end of the show,” she said, adding that the music played throughout the show by a live six-piece band is “very solid” and award-winning.

Tickets for Quidam are $35 for adults and $28 for children 12 and under. Leboeuf said the show is great for a date-night and for families because children especially will be “so inspired by the performers.”
