Salute African-American churches:
Profiles in Excellence, a tribute to Lake County’s African-American churches, will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road, near North Chicago. Visitors will learn the fascinating history of Lake County’s first African-American churches, which opened in the 1860s in response to an influx of African-Americans to the county during and after the Civil War. From slavery to Christianity, community leaders and historians will tell the story of how the churches evolved into the leadership and service roles they hold today. Singers and praise dancers will perform. Free refreshments will be served. Call (847) 968-3477.
