Opening arguments set in Ind. secretary of state trial
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — Embattled Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White appeared in good spirits as a jury prepared to hear voter fraud allegations against him in a Central Indiana courtroom.
White spoke with his attorney, Carl Brizzi, and chatted with reporters Tuesday morning before opening arguments began in the Hamilton County Courthouse in Noblesville.
Special prosecutor Dan Sigler Sr. wheeled a cart laden with 11 boxes of evidence into the courtroom before court proceedings began.
White faces voter fraud, perjury and theft charges. The Republican is accused of voting in 2010 from an address where he didn't live and continuing to take his Fishers town councilman's salary after moving from his district.
White has maintained his innocence. If convicted, he could face prison time and be forced to leave office.
