Lake Villa Township woman admits attacking, stealing from 69-year-old man

A 44-year-old Lake Villa Township woman was placed on probation for 30 months Tuesday after she admitted she attacked a 69-year-old man and stole one of his Social Security checks.

Michelle Sciortino pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and theft during a hearing before Lake County Circuit Judge Fred Foreman.

Assistant State’s Attorney Reginald Mathews said Sciortino, of the 36000 block of North Nathan Hale Drive, and the Grayslake victim had a dating relationship and Sciortino also served as his caretaker.

The Department of Veteran’s Affairs had a public guardian appointed for the man because of his poor health and the guardian notice several unusual injuries in the man’s VA hospital records.

Grayslake police interviewed the man and he reported he suffered several broken ribs and bruises on Jan. 29, 2009 because Sciortino had pushed him down a flight of stairs.

The man also told police he had never received his $2,673 check from Social Security due at the end of December 2009, even though bank records showed it had been cashed.

Police determined Sciortino had gotten the check from the man’s mail, signed his name to it and cashed it herself, Mathews said.

Foreman scheduled a hearing for April 10 to determine how much money Sciortino must repay the man.
