Learn about electricity referendum at informational meetings

Residents and businesses can attend informational meetings to learn more about the referendum question that will be on the March 20, 2012, election ballot pertaining to aggregation of electricity.

The referendum is a requirement by state law which, if approved, would allow municipalities to seek competitive pricing for the provision of electricity to residents and small businesses.

Arlington Heights will be one of 154 Illinois municipalities with this referendum question on the election ballot asking voters if the Village should have the authority to seek competitive pricing bids for electric services under a single contract.

The referendum question will specifically ask:

Shall the Village Arlington Heights have the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity

for its residential and small commercial retail customers who have not opted out of such program?

Arlington Heights is working with six other area communities on this initiative by sharing resources and buying power to aggregate a greater load of electricity.

To learn more about this opportunity to seek lower electrical costs, Arlington Heights residents and businesses can attend any of the upcoming information meetings:

Tuesday, February 21, 7:30 pm

Arlington Heights Village Hall, 33 South Arlington Heights Rd

Wednesday, February 29, 2:00 pm

Buffalo Grove Village Hall, 50 Raupp Boulevard

Thursday, March 8, 7:00 pm

Vernon Hills Village Hall, 290 Evergreen Drive

If the referendum is approved, the Village will pursue competitive pricing from the ICC certified wholesale electric suppliers for this initiative. If the resulting prices are lower than current prices from ComEd, the Village would accept the best price.

It is anticipated that Arlington Heights residents and small businesses will receive about a 20% savings off the electric supply portion of their bill. If individuals do not want to participate in the program, they can "opt-out" and don't have to change electric suppliers. If residents and small businesses already have a contract with an electric supplier other than ComEd, they could opt-in when their contract expires.

If you have questions about the Village's aggregation efforts, please call the Public Works Department at 847-368-5800.
