Witnesses report fire before SE Ind. plane crash

VERNON, Ind. — Two witnesses say they heard an explosion before a small plane carrying a southeastern Indiana couple crashed miles short of Madison Municipal Airport.

Becky Puckett tells WLKY-TV that she was driving from Madison to a friend’s house Saturday night when she saw a ball of fire in the sky and then an explosion when the plane hit the ground. The 1968 single-engine Cessna crashed near the Jennings-Jefferson county line about 15 miles north of Madison.

Jeremy Wade tells WLKY that he was indoors when he and others heard the sound of a racing engine and then an explosion.

The crash Saturday night killed Gregory and Candace Wehr. Both were 55. The couple operated a farm near Versailles.

The Federal Aviation Administration has sent investigators to the scene.
