Man gets $25M for wrongful conviction

A Cook County jury has awarded $25 million to a man who sued the city of Chicago after he spent more than half of his life in prison for a murder he didn’t commit.

Thaddeus Jimenez was 13 years old when he was convicted in 1993 for the murder of Eric Morro.

He served 16 years in prison before prosecutors asked a judge to vacate his sentence and he received a certificate of innocence in 2009.

Jimenez filed a lawsuit later that year, naming the city of Chicago and several police officers.

A jury awarded Jimenez $25 million in damages on Tuesday.

His attorneys say they believe the award is the largest given in a wrongful conviction case.

A message left for a city spokesman wasn’t immediately returned.
