2 dead after car collides with Amtrak train
KENNER, La. — Two people in a vehicle died after it collided Tuesday with an Amtrak train in Kenner, police said.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said nobody on the New Orleans-bound train, which left Chicago Monday night, was injured when it struck the vehicle in its path.
Kenner Police Lt. Wayne McInnis said both occupants of the vehicle died upon impact.
Investigators were trying to identify the two victims and determine why they were on a private road belonging to the East Jefferson Levee District. McInnis said the vehicle was crossing the tracks at a spot that has warning signs but doesn’t have crossing arms that lower when a train approaches.
Magliari said the train was carrying roughly 59 passengers at the time of Tuesday afternoon’s collision. Its scheduled arrival in New Orleans was delayed while police investigated.
