Richmond police hope to mount equestrian unit

RICHMOND, Ind. — Some police in an eastern Indiana city may trade their patrol cars for horses.

The Palladium-Item reports that Richmond police are working with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department to develop an equestrian unit.

Six full-time and reserve officers have volunteered the use of their horses to form the mounted unit. The horses will initially be used in parades and festivals starting this spring, and eventually will be considered for actual police work.

Maj. Kevin Wampler says the horses will make officers more approachable and help in interactions with the public.

Police hope to raise about $10,000 for equipment and training. Officials say the project won’t require tax money.
