Inmate recaptured after escape from Indiana prison

BUNKER HILL, Ind. — Indiana Department of Correction officials say an inmate is back in custody after briefly escaping from a state prison.

Authorities say 38-year-old Donald Sorrell was discovered missing shortly after midnight Friday at Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis. Sorrell was a medium security prisoner.

Officials at the prison say Sorrell was recaptured Saturday by police. He is now housed in the Westville Correctional Facility’s maximum security unit.

Authorities didn’t release any information about how he escaped or where he was captured.

Sorrell is serving a 20-year sentence on robbery charges out of Hendricks County. His earliest release date is in 2018.

IDOC says the Miami prison is on lockdown following the escape, and internal affairs and state police are investigating the incident.
