Lack of snow melts N. Ind. city’s snowman contest

ELKHART, Ind. — A normally snowy northern Indiana city has canceled its snowman-building contest because there’s not enough snow on the ground for the family event.

The Elkhart Truth reports the Elkhart Parks and Recreation department canceled Saturday’s contest at a city park due to the city’s scant snowfall.

Parks department events assistant Rechica L. Marlow says there needs to be 6 to 8 inches of snow on the ground to provide enough snow for families taking part in the contest to be able to build snowmen.

Snow is in Elkhart’s forecast, however. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines tells the newspaper the area will get 2 to 4 inches of snow on Saturday, and some areas could get 6 inches.
