Thinking twice after the holidays

The ho-ho-ho of the holidays have ended. The Oh No! of what you’ve spent will appear in your mailbox shortly. The traditions and the joy of giving don’t come cheap. Can’t even blame the credit card companies for this one — it’s self-inflicted.

Going through the receipts I’ve accumulated makes me realize I’ve spent a great deal of money at our local Wal-Mart, a store many of us didn’t want in our town in the first place. And yet, it’s here. We go there. It’s close, has decent prices and beats driving to Gurnee. I’m as guilty as the next guy.

Antioch is happy. A town with only a few business streets, this is a tax windfall. Has to make one wonder though — all the subdivisions, small stores and the new ones on 173 where all this “tax revenue” is going.

I’m guessing, and hoping, to the schools. But, is that extra money reducing your taxes? If it is, please let me know.

The store does in fact offer employment, a good thing. Can’t deny that.

What I don’t like is the store you spend your hard-earned money in treats you like a criminal. Upon leaving, forget about putting on your gloves, finding your keys. Can’t do it. Keep that receipt in your mouth if you have to.

It’s not the employees’ fault, they are doing their job as instructed. It’s insulting at the very least.
