<h3 class="briefHead">Police: Man killed four near Oakbrook Terrace, set home on fire</h3>

A 42-year-old man who was found dead in his father's Dolton home yesterday is believed to have killed his girlfriend, her two sons and her niece yesterday before setting fire to the woman's home near Oakbrook Terrace. Ursula Nailor, 37; her sons Darnell Holt, 16, and Daniel Nailor, 13; and her niece, 19-year-old Dominique Robinson, were found dead in the burning home. Police said Cedric Anderson shot all four victims before lighting the house on fire. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Classmates hold vigil for vicitims</h3>

Word of the tragedy spread quickly Tuesday through the hallways of Willowbrook High, where Darnell Holt was a popular four-sport athlete. News also got out via Facebook, and as a result, about 100 Willowbrook students attended a candlelight vigil outside the family's house on Summit Avenue Tuesday night. <h3 class="briefHead">Do we get all the gas we pay for? Not always</h3>

Eighty gas stations located in a wide swath of the suburbs had at least one fuel line that failed state inspections over the past three years, giving more or less gas than what was purchased, our Suburban Tax Watchdog Jake Griffin reports. Last year at a Mundelein station, inspectors determined one line wasn't giving as much gasoline as had been purchased, while two lines were giving more gas. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">D300 official: Bullet fragment struck classroom window during chase</h3>

A Carpentersville police drug sting in a McDonald's parking lot early yesterday went wrong quickly when one of the suspects rammed a police car injuring two officers. The officers fired shots at the suspect's vehicle as he fled the scene less than 100 yards from Lakewood Elementary School, which was immediately placed on lockdown. School officials said a bullet fragment hit a classroom window. The driver was taken in an ambulance with an apparent gunshot wound after the 20-mile chase. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Woman who abandoned son in Wheaton found unfit to be mother</h3>

Nunu Sung, now 27, claimed she intended to return for her newborn son she left in a Wheaton yard in 2009, but a judge said that intent wasn't enough and found her unfit to be a mother. "All she had to do was say something to somebody," DuPage County Judge Robert Anderson said. Sung now faces another round of court proceedings to determine if it's in the child's best interest to terminate her parental rights. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">DuPage forest officials: What to do with extra $2 million?</h3>

DuPage County Forest Preserve District officials are deciding what to do with more than $2 million, which will be saved over the next 12 years through refinancing debt. One option would be to reduce the tax levy and return the money to taxpayers. A second would be to acquire land or a long-term project at sites like Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn or St. James Farm in Warrenville. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Algonquin girl told 'Get in the van'; suspects match Jan. 3 attempt</h3>

District 300 school officials are warning parents and bus drivers to be on the lookout for two men who are suspected of attempting to abduct Algonquin Middle School students. For the second time this month and third time in 14 months, a white van with two men tried to lure students from bus stops. The two men in a white conversion van match the description from all three attempts, and told a girl to "get in the van" yesterday morning. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Naperville cuts backyard chicken allowance to 8</h3>

The Naperville chicken saga inside the city council continued last night, as the council asked city staff to write up an ordinance limiting the number of chickens allowed to 8. The ordinance would require a 30-foot separation between a chicken coop and a neighbor's house and also ban roosters. " ... We never thought we'd be dealing with chicken-keeping right next to our home. This is no longer a small farming community," longtime resident Susan Borghesi said. full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Des Plaines raises water, sewer rates</h3>

The Des Plaines city council last night approved a roughly 21 percent increase to the city's water and sewer rates, retroactive to Jan. 1, which includes Chicago's 25 percent water rate increase for 2012 that will be passed on to Des Plaines residents, officials said. Des Plaines is in the second year of a 10-year water agreement with Chicago, a deal some aldermen would like to get out of. "Your city is working hard to look for other alternative plans to resolve this," Des Plaines 4th Ward Alderman Dick Sayad said. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Arlington Hts. to get new gas station, car wash</h3>

A new gas station, convenience store and car wash could open by July 4 on the northwest corner of Arlington Heights and Algonquin roads in Arlington Heights. Trustee Joseph Farwell said he passes the site twice a day and is tired of looking at the peeling paint and weeds. He also said the corner is "a gateway to our south portion, especially for people coming off I-90." Full story.

What seemed like it could become a semi-stress free commute to work today is turning into chaos. Accidents are reported at Route 120 and Cedar Lake Road near Round Lake, Route 53 and Euclid in Rolling Meadows, and Lake-Cook Road at Raupp Blvd in Buffalo Grove among others. Drivers should be warned that, because of the cold, it is still slick out there and to slow down. People should remember that Walkup Road from Route 176 through Burning Bush Drive in Crystal Lake is slow due to construction. With Rose taking another day off with the nagging left-toe injury, Boozer took over last night, scoring a season-high 31 points in an easy 118-97 victory over the Phoenix Suns at the United Center. It was less than two weeks ago that Mike Tice was promoted from his job as Bears offensive line coach to offensive coordinator, replacing Mike Martz. Now Tice might be moving up again - but not with the Bears. Epstein took giant strides in avoiding salary arbitrations yesterday, as the Cubs agreed to terms with six of their seven arbitration eligible players. The only player filing for arbitration - and he's an important one - is ace pitcher Matt Garza, who reportedly wants $10.225 million while the Cubs are offering $7.95 million. Full story.
