Kitchen fire causes smoke damage at Elk Grove business

An Elk Grove Village business suffered extensive smoke damage Sunday following a fire in a Touhy Avenue industrial building.

Firefighters were called to the fire at 12:08 p.m. on the 1200 block of Touhy Ave.

Elk Grove fire Lt. Mike Keenan said the fire likely started in the building’s kitchen area.

“There was no involvement in the warehousing and manufacturing area,” he said. “It was all up front in the office area.”

Keenan did not have an exact name for the business, but believed it was involved in refurbishing old machinery.

One man was in the building at the time. Keenan said he evacuated the building and called 911, telling the dispatcher he heard a noise up front and went to investigate, and found a lot of smoke.

Firefighters from Schaumburg, Des Plaines and Itasca assisted in fighting the fire, which was extinguished in 20 minutes, although firefighters stayed on the scene for about 2½ hours.

The fire, which did not affect neighboring buildings, is under investigation. A damage estimate was not available Sunday.
