Ind. court disbars lawyer who attacked legislator

INDIANAPOLIS — A lawyer found guilty but mentally ill for an attack on Democratic state Rep. Ed. DeLaney has been disbarred.

The Indiana Supreme Court on Friday permanently disbarred Augustus Mendenhall for attempted murder and other criminal acts.

Mendenhall was sentenced to 40 years in prison in November 2010 after a Hamilton County jury found him guilty but mentally ill in connection with an attack on DeLaney a year earlier.

Authorities said a longtime grudge preceded Mendenhall's attack on DeLaney, a longtime Indianapolis attorney. He arranged to meet Delaney in Carmel, saying he wanted to discuss a real estate deal. But instead he beat DeLaney and tried to shoot him.
