Inmate who escaped on way to prison dies in cell
An inmate who escaped last month from a van transporting him from a suburban courthouse to a prison in northern Illinois has been found dead in a federal lockup.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office says an autopsy Thursday didn’t determine the cause of death of Cesar Sanchez, who was found this week in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday.
Sanchez was serving a seven-year sentence that began in 2006 for burglaries in Cook and Kane counties.
Authorities say the 37-year-old Sanchez last month kicked open a door and leapt from the moving vehicle in Lockport. He was found six hours later hiding in a portable toilet in a storage yard in Rockdale.
