10 more Wis. communities named “Bird Cities”
MILWAUKEE — Ten more Wisconsin communities have been named “Bird Cities.”
The Milwaukee Audubon Society started the “Bird City Wisconsin” project last year. It recognizes efforts to improve bird habitat, manage woodlands, limit hazards and educate citizens about birds.
The 10 new communities include the cities of Kenosha, Plymouth, Beaver Dam and Mayville; the villages of Ephraim, Fontana, Shorewood Hills, Grantsburg and Sherwood, and the Town of Baileys Harbor.
There are now 39 communities in the state with that designation.
BCW coordinator Carl Schwartz says 30 additional communities are undergoing efforts to gain the Bird City status.
The group hopes it becomes as popular as Tree City USA, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation.
