‘Stone Soup’ teaches Barrington preschoolers to share

Submitted by Christine Streed

“Stone Soup” is an old fable told with several variations in many countries. During the holiday season each year, the children of Noah’s Ark Christian Preschool, Barrington, experience the fable through both hearing and sharing.

The tale begins with a hungry young man passing through a town. He visits a resident with an offer to make soup using only a stone and a pot of boiling water. The resident is curious and supplies vegetables, potatoes, and a little meat as requested by the young man to “flavor” the soup.

After the children hear the tale, they contribute their own ingredients to help stock the shelves of the FISH Food Pantry in Carpentersville.
