Park district hosts free tax preparation for seniors

AARP is offering free tax preparation service for seniors 60 years and older at the Elk Grove Park District’s Sheila Ray Adult Center, 225 E. Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove Village.

Seniors with low to moderate incomes may sign up at the center to have their 2011 federal and state income tax returns prepared for free. Volunteers for the IRS-AARP Tax Aide Service are available to help with both electronic and paper filings. Tax returns will be prepared on Wednesdays and Fridays from Feb. 1 through April 13. Appointment times are 8:30, 10, and 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers can prepare federal form 1040 with schedules for interest, dividends, itemized deductions, and capital gains, and forms C-EZ and SE for persons with self-employment income and expenses under $5,000. They cannot prepare complicated returns including Schedule C profit or loss from business, Schedule Events and losses, Form 8606 nondeductible IRAs, out-of-state gambling winnings and out-of-state sale of property.
