Waukegan Y Swim Team Makes Strong Showing at Belvidere Invitational

The Northern Lake YMCA Seahorse Swim Team completed its winter invitational schedule Jan. 8 with a successful trip to the David Wolf Invitational at the Belvidere YMCA.

In a crowded pool of more than 250 swimmers, several Seahorses finished in the top places with several personal-best times. Reece Wiatrowski qualified for districts for the first time in the Boys 8 & Under 25-yard breaststroke. In the Girls 9-10 category, Ellie Nerheim and Vaughan Spratt-Szarzynski added new district times to their list in the 50-yard breaststroke and 50-yard freestyle, respectively.

“These swimmers had a great meet coming off a hard winter practice schedule,” Head Coach Mike Hewitt said. “We have meets almost every weekend from now to the championships and hope to see even more time drops.”

The next meet for the Seahorses is Jan. 22 against the Folgia YMCA in Lake Zurich. The team will be holding their annual swim-a-thon fundraiser Jan. 14 at the Waukegan High School pool. Visit www.seahorseswimming.org if you would like to donate.
