Warren stays hot at Lake Zurich’s expense
Warren’s hot streak continued on Tuesday night as the Blue Devils won their second game in the row and their sixth in the past seven.
Jessica Prince, Amanda Barger and Alyssa Phillips combined for 21 rebounds, including 8 offensive boards, to defeat host Lake Zurich 42-26 in a North Suburban Conference Lake Division game.
After trailing 10-7 in the first quarter, Warren’s (11-7, 4-3) defense allowed the Bears only 5 shots in the second. Prince brought down 5 of her rebounds and Cassie Christie scored all 6 of her points as the Blue Devils exploded 16-2 in the second to lead 23-12 heading into the half.
This came after both teams won handily on Saturday — the Bears (12-6, 4-3) defeated North Chicago by jumping out to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter, and Warren got past Wauconda.
It was Prince’s second straight solid game as she led all scorers with 13 points.
“I just got upset that I couldn’t get my shots off in the first quarter,” the three-year varsity starter said.”I just got my head into the game in the second quarter.”
Prince is happy with the improvement she’s displayed from a year ago at this time.
“I think I am a little more knowledgeable of the game this year,” said Prince, who had 7 rebounds (3 offensive). “So I have been able to use that experience on the floor.”
Alexis Leneau scored 9 points while Phillips (6 points) and Barger both had 7 rebounds.
Warren won the turnover battle 18-10 and shot 19-for-45 from the floor.
Lake Zurich shot 10-for-43 from the field, including only 5-for-20 in the first half.
“I think that today was a real team effort,” Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said. “We really worked well defensively. We took away a lot of of good looks for them, and we shot the ball well and we got some real great looks. This is two games in a row that I felt that we competed and played well on both sides of the ball.”
Stephanie Schmid led the Bears with 10 points. Cathryne Spear scored 7 points and had 8 rebounds, and Dori Darras led LZ with 9 rebounds
Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett wasn’t happy with the second quarter.
“I’m not sure what (Warren) adusted on their zone, but it took us out of anything we were doing well,” said Bennett whose Bears fell to 4-3 in the NSC Lake. “Their zone was effective. We couldn’t hit any shots and they kept the momentum, and we just couldn’t take it away from them.”
