Submitted by City of Elgin

The Elgin Human Relations Commission, along with the Dr. King Celebration Committee, recently announced the winners of the 2012 Humanitarian Awards, which will be presented during the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, Jan. 14.

Humanitarian Awards will be presented to three recipients this year: John Dalton, the YWCA of Elgin and League of United Latin American Citizens Local Council 5236.

Dalton will be recognized for his outstanding advocacy and civil rights work on behalf of the LBGT community and as co-founder and past chair of Speak Out Against Prejudice.

The YWCA will be recognized for the organization’s long-standing history of service and its many programs that empower and support women and families and that foster diversity and equality among many disenfranchised community groups.

LULAC 5236 will be honored for its tremendous strides in improving the lives of local Latinos and its collaboration with other organizations to build strong bridges among the various ethnic and racial groups in Elgin.
