Fire causes $250,000 damage to Des Plaines home

Fire swept through a Des Plaines home Sunday morning, causing an estimated $250,000 in damage and leaving the residence uninhabitable, officials said.

The sole occupant of the home was able to escape, along with a dog, after being alerted to the fire by an alarm. She was evaluated at the scene by paramedics, having breathed in some smoke, but did not require treatment.

Des Plaines firefighters were called at 8:24 a.m. to the single-family residence in the 1700 block of Farwell Avenue and extinguished the flames within 25 minutes, officials said. Rosemont Public Safety also provided assistance with an engine and an ambulance.

Fire damage was extensive on the home’s first floor, and there was smoke damage to the remainder of the residence and its contents, according to the fire department.

The fire began in a first-floor utility room, however the cause is still under investigation, officials said.
